Sara McDaniel, Ph.D.
Director

Dr. Sara McDaniel is a Professor in the Department of Special Education and Director of the Alabama Positive Behavior Support Office at the University of Alabama. Dr. McDaniel earned her Ph.D. from Georgia State University in special education (mild disabilities). Dr. McDaniel teaches methods, assessment, and behavior management courses. Dr. McDaniel’s research involves the three-tiered model of prevention known as positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS/MTSS) ranging from early intervention through secondary and includes alternative education settings. Dr. McDaniel focuses on both behavioral and academic interventions and supports for students with challenging behavior and educator well-being.

DeAna Byrd, Clinical Instructor

DeAna Byrd is the Project Coordinator for the Alabama Positive Behavior Support Office at the University of Alabama. She has experience training, implementing, and coaching school faculty in Positive Behavior Interventions Support (PBIS). DeAna has worked closely with schools in St. Clair County, Birmingham City, Huntsville City, and Tuscumbia City school districts. In addition, she is the Project Director for the Project AWARE and School Climate Transformation federal grants in St. Clair County. She was previously the Project Director of the federal Safe Schools Healthy Students grant and the state Preparing Alabama Students for Success grant in St. Clair County. Prior to her work with school systems, she was a social worker for therapeutic foster children and their families.  DeAna received her Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Alabama. DeAna is a Licensed Graduate Social Worker. In her free time, she enjoys various activities with her two children, Sara and Bryce.
